`Good Evening !` Says Steve Hovington to the audience, `Let`s party like its 1981 !` and the Hidden Treasures tour kicks off with Citizen Kane, one of 3 `new-old`tracks that were recorded way back in 1981 but never released in the absence of that should-have-been debut Album. But here we are on the day of the release of the Hidden Treasures Album, over 40 years later than intended. The band are on top form at Rebellion, Manchester, the first of 3 gigs in 3 nights. For nearly everyone present this is the first ever hearing of `Citizen Kane`, then the funkier `Ice` and later `La Lune Lunatique`. Ice in fact could easily have been the b-side to Marilyn Dreams as it was on the same demo recorded in Mansfield back in 1981. The set is practically a typical B-Movie set as was in 1981/82. Even `Another False Dawn` from 2016 is skipped from the set list. Keith has more tweaks on his keyboards to play with for this tour and Drummer Graham Boffey has new `80s style metallic-sounding percussion to add to the retro feel. The band sound great from my vantage point filming next to the sound booth in the `sweet spot` in the room. This is the 9th time ive seen them, 3rd in the last 12 months and I think this is the best they`ve sounded ! Steve credits both Manager Andy Woods and soundman Roger Lyons for all the hard work in sourcing the lost tracks and restoring them to a quality good enough to release. The set finishes with those 3 old favourite up-tempo tracks...`Scare Some Life into Me`, `Moles` and `Remembrance Day` to a rousing response. Sadly there`s not much time for the band to meet the fans due to the 11 o`clock curfew and its off to London in the morning for the band. ( review by Dave Smith )
