March 2006 - The Metro Club, Oxford St. London

B-Movie have fond memories of their early visit as young men to the bright neon lights of swinging Soho in 1981. Steve`s solo album Audience With Myself of 2022 even contains a lament to the loss of Soho`s characteristic neons in the song Soho Lights. That part of Soho in that era was probably best immortalised by Soft Cell `s `Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret` LP cover and video for the track `Seedy Films`. Afterall Soft Cell didnt have far to walk far being based in St,Annes Court, a cut through between Dean Street and Wardour Street. Of course Soho was the birth place of the New Romantic movement in 1978 when Steve Strange hosted the Billy`s Night club from the basement at 69 Dean Street on the corner of Meard Street before moving to the famous Blitz club in Covent Garden. Spandau Ballet also added to Soho`s colourful cultural history featuring `Le Beat Route` club in another basement on Greek Street in the video `Chant no.1` . I went in there as a pilgrimage and it remains the most expensive place ive ever paid to get into on a night out ! B-Movie became part of that Soho history when in 1983 they did 3 gigs at the world famous Marquee club on Wardour Street, Anyway, back to our boys, in 2004 B-Movie returned to Soho to play their first gig for many years ( see 2004 page ) and again here in 2006 when Steve and Paul plus backing band returned to Soho to the Metro Club, 19-23 Oxford Street. This was a basement night club ( The Blow Up ) and music venue of modest size but big on importance. Other bands that played there included The Kings of Leon, The Killers, Scissor Sisters and early Kaiser Chiefs. By 2006 Soho was already becoming unrecognisable from the days of the 1980s and sadly the Metro Club too was to disappear. B-Movie, as the reformed original 4 members, returned in 2008 but the Metro closed in January 2009 after being compulsory purchased for demolition as part of the construction of the Crossrail station at Tottenham Court Road. I wasnt there but fellow fan and You Tuber JPS was and these are the 4 video clips he posted at the time.
